The number of lives lost in an Ecuadorian prison has risen to 68 after riots broke out.
Riots erupted at Litoral Prison in the southwestern city of Guayaquil, local media reported.
According to the latest information, at least 68 people have lost their lives and 12 others have been injured in the riots. Local media reported that the riots in the prison are still going on.
To quell the rebellion, large numbers of members of the army and police were sent to prison earlier. During the search, a large quantity of weapons and various sharp tools were seized.
The cause of the revolt is said to be the struggle for leadership between prison gangs and poor prison conditions.
President Guillermo Lasso announced at a news conference on September 31 that a 60-day “state of emergency” had been declared in all prisons in the country.
In Ecuadorian prisons, where there are some 38,000 inmates, similar gang incidents are common.
Nearly 300 inmates have died so far this year in the country’s prisons. The September gang-related violence was the worst in Ecuador’s history, with more than a hundred prisoners killed. Meanwhile, in the riots that broke out simultaneously in three cities of the country on February 24, 80 prisoners lost their lives.
