Anthony Fauci, the top public official for infectious diseases in the US, said on Tuesday that if America further raises vaccination rates and those already vaccinated receive booster doses it is possible that COVID-19 could be reduced by a pandemic emergency to status endemic next year.
According to The Guardian, more than 70 percent of adults in the US are fully vaccinated. Fauci pointed out that if more Americans get the vaccines and if the US makes additional doses available to everyone, the country could take control of the virus by the spring of 2022.
But with his prediction, Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and chief medical adviser to US President Joe Biden, was acknowledging what experts now widely believe: that COVID-19 can not be eliminated and is likely to be done endemic, which means that it will always be present in the population to some extent, such as influenza or chickenpox.
“For me, if you want to reach the endemic level, then you have to work on reducing the level of infection so that it will no longer have an impact on society, your life or even your economy,” said Fauci.
