The province of British Columbia in Canada has declared a state of emergency after being hit by a powerful storm that destroyed road infrastructure. The Canadian Armed Forces have been mobilized to help thousands of residents who have been stranded since Sunday.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau asked for help during a visit to Washington and said troops would help rebuild.
A woman died from the landslide and two people have been declared missing.
Regional authorities have attributed the natural disaster to the effects of climate change. The impact of the latter on storm frequency is still unclear, but sea and ocean temperatures have risen.
This accumulates more energy causing hurricanes, hurricanes and cyclones and as a result storms are more powerful.
