Russian troops are engaged in heavy fighting as they enter Ukraine’s Donetsk region after taking control of the last two towns in neighboring Luhansk, Luhansk’s regional governor said.
Serhiy Gaidai said Russian troops had suffered heavy losses in the long battle to capture the twin cities of Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk, but were now channeling their efforts to move south.
“Fierce fighting is taking place on the edge of the Luhansk region… All Russian army forces and reserves have been redirected there… They are suffering heavy losses,” Mr Gaidai told Ukrainian television.
“A large amount of equipment is being sent to the Donetsk region. Of course, after the Luhansk region, Donetsk is at the top of their list.”
