The city of Severodonetsk is on the “brink of a humanitarian catastrophe” two weeks after it was overrun by Russian forces, a regional official has warned.
Governors i Luhanskuts Serhiy Haidai said: “The Russians have completely destroyed all the critical infrastructure and they are not able to repair anything.”
He previously said only 8,000 residents remained in the city, which had a pre-war population of about 100,000.
Despite Kremlin forces capturing the main cities of Severodonetsk and Lysychansk, Mr Haidai denied claims that Moscow was in full control of the Luhansk region.
“Luhansk has not been fully captured even though the Russians have committed their entire arsenal to achieve this goal,” he said.
“Fierce battles are taking place in some villages on the border of the region. The Russians are relying on tanks and artillery to advance, leaving scorched earth.”
Russian forces “hit any building that they think might be a fortified position,” he said.
“They are not stopped by the fact that civilians are left there and they die in their homes and yards. They keep shooting.”
