The population of the countries of the European Union is registering a terrible decline year after year. The decrease in the number of births and the increase in deaths have followed almost the same trend in the 27 member countries of the bloc for several years.
Thus, after the first decline in 2020, the number of the EU population continued to decrease in 2021, passing, according to the data of Eurostatfrom 447 million on January 1, 2021 to 446.8 million on January 1, 2022.
According to data from the European statistics office, the worst decline with minus 253,000 inhabitants was recorded in Italy, while in second place was France with 185,900 inhabitants less in the period of one year. As for the third country, it belongs to Poland, which has lost 185,800 inhabitants.
Meanwhile, negative natural changes more deaths than births outpaced positive net migration for the second year, most likely due to the impact of the pandemic.
