The new blood test, which was presented at a European Society of Oncology congress, recognizes tumor DNA and where it is found in the body. The test shows not only if the patient has cancer, but also its type.
The researchers tested about 6,000 people over the age of 50 for cancer. About one percent of the blood tests were positive. Subsequent tests confirmed that a third of those who tested positive did indeed have cancer. Tumors were found in a total of 15 organs and other body tissues in the test subjects.
However, the test cannot yet replace regular cancer screenings, as the technology still needs to be improved./DW
