The intensive negotiations between Lebanon and Israel on the demarcation of the maritime border are moving towards a positive outcome. The two countries are close to a historic agreement that will allow the removal of obstacles to the exploitation of hydrocarbon deposits in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Lebanon and Israel are officially at war over a border dispute, although there has been US mediation for two years.
The talks have continued for the last few days. Today, Israel announced that it had received a positive response to its concerns regarding Lebanon’s amendments.
“All our requests have been accepted, the changes we requested have been made. We have ensured Israel’s security interests, we are on the way to a historic agreement”, said Eyal Hulata, national security adviser of Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid.
Afterwards, a senior Lebanese official involved in the negotiations emphasized that Beirut had accepted the final proposal of the US mediator, which “includes most of Lebanon’s demands or proposals”.
The final proposal of the American mediator will be given during the day to the Lebanese President Michel Aoun, according to the same source.
